Monthly Poet Features & Open Mic

Join Ukiah Branch Library staff as we host poetry events in-person on the third Saturdays of each month at 3 p.m. This free event is open to both teens and adults. All are invited to share poems in any form or style or just listen to others. On September 19, we welcome Shizue Seigel.

Seigel is a Japanese American writer and visual artist living in San Francisco. Seigel’s passion for social justice arises from her family’s incarceration in American concentration camps during World War II, which led to her childhood as an Army brat in segregated Baltimore, post occupation Japan, skid-row Stockton, and strawberry sharecropping camps. As an adult, her search for purpose in an unjust world continued in the Haight-Ashbury, Indian ashrams, corporate offices, public housing, and needle exchanges. In 2015, she established, Write Now! SF Bay to support writers/artists of color through readings, workshops, exhibitions, and anthologies funded by California State Library, California Arts Council, San Francisco Arts Commission, and others. Her nine books include “Uncommon Ground: BIPOC Journeys to Creative Activism,” “Civil Liberties United,” and three other BIPOC anthologies, a poetry collection, and three books on the Japanese American experience.
