The City of Ukiah and the surrounding Ukiah Valley have attracted attention since the mid-1850s. Initially part of Sonoma County, Ukiah became a city in 1856, then joined Mendocino County when it was formed in 1859. The area was part of the Yokayo Rancho, a Spanish land grant.
